What the press is saying about Nilüfer Yanya:

“Nilüfer Yanya’s melodies have a pull so strong they almost necessitate their own law of physics”

Pitchfork

“The magnificent PAINLESS is so well paced that one of the peak musical moments of the year comes at its direct center”

New York Times 'Best Albums of 2022 - Lindsay Zoladz’

“filling its tracks with brooding, grungy rock that masterfully honors the quiet darkness of her work.”

NPR 'The 10 Best Rock Albums of 2022’

"a seemingly unending pile of hooks that have a way of getting under your skin"

Stereogum '50 Best Albums of 2022'

“The excellent second album by Londoner Nilüfer Yanya stands out… the 12 songs on PAINLESS have soul and mood as well as a crisp indie rock tension.”

Vogue 'Best Albums of 2022'

(April 24th, 2024) Today, Nilüfer Yanya returns with her new single and music video “Like I Say (I runaway).” This offering is her first new music since the release of her celebrated 2022 album PAINLESS and announces her signing to Ninja Tune. The new single is a glowing example of Yanya’s authenticity and innate creativity that effortlessly flows from pen to paper and is a first taste of more music to come.

“Like I Say (I runaway)” comes alongside a music video directed by Yanya’s sister Molly Daniel that features Nilüfer as a runaway bride. The song highlights chunky, distorted guitar crunches under a chorus loosely reminiscent of 90’s alternative radio. The single focuses on the moment when you realize how precious time is. Speaking more about the single’s thesis Nilüfer shares, “It’s about how you choose to spend your time. Time is like a currency, every moment. You’re never going to get it back. It’s quite an overwhelming thing to realize.”

The new single was written in collaboration with Yanya’s creative partner, Wilma Archer (Sudan Archives, MF DOOM, Celeste), with whom she’s previously collaborated on PAINLESS and her debut album Miss Universe. Throughout their creative process, a clear emphasis was placed on forming a safe musical space where creative impulses were encouraged and all perceived musical boundaries were eroded. This same process is reflected in the song’s lyrics, which emphasize unrestricted artistry and standing firm in one’s truest self as Yanya attempts to make sense of the world around her.

Nilüfer’s previous album PAINLESS has consistently been celebrated as one of 2022’s most outstanding albums, ranked among the year's best by The New York Times, NPR, Pitchfork with a Best New Music stamp, Vulture and more. The album features the stand-out tracks "anotherlife," "stabilise" and "midnight sun," which Nilüfer performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy FallonNilüfer has also performed on Late Night with Stephen ColbertLater with Jools Holland and NPR’s legendary Tiny Desk concert series. She’s supported Adele, the XX and Mitski on tour, headlining London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire and selling out shows across Europe, Australia, Japan and the USA. Yanya has also been remixed by Sampha, King Krule and Little Dragon and has collaborated with Bombay Bicycle Club and Liss. Nilüfer is a founding member of the community project Artists In Transit which takes creative workshops and other support to displaced communities and people in times of hardship.

Today, Shannon Lay shares new single, “Mirrors”, a peaceful and gentle tune which explores the idea of learning to recognize what we are holding and decide if it is serving us or not.

Says Lay on the track, "It takes radical vulnerability to see and recognize your whole self in a compassionate light. To accept that you deserve peace and to realize it’s right on the other side of being with what you resist. There is nothing wrong with us, we are unique and beautiful and chaotic just like the stars we come from. Love is available at all times and you are its strongest source. Admire your growth as you would any other part of nature. Look up and see your reflection in the sky.

“Mirrors” was created the first day that Rob Shelton and I sat down in the studio to write together.  Rob is one of the amazing owners and engineers of Altamira Sound in Alhambra, CA, a place I fell in love with as I watched it be built during the pandemic and that further won my heart when I recorded “Covers Vol. 1” there. Rob started playing piano and I started writing lyrics and from there “Mirrors” expanded into such an incredible collaboration."

Produced by Rob Shelton featuring Jill Ryan on Flute, Doug Stuart on stand up bass, Carly Bond on electric guitar, Jesse Quebbeman-Turley on drums, Shannon Lay on acoustic guitar, and Rob Shelton on synths and piano. Mixed by Rob Shelton and Shannon Lay and mastered by Dave McNair.

Shannon Lay Bio:

Shannon Lay’s music is shored by radical empathy. After 15 years of writing, recording and performing her singularly gentle songs in venues around the world, the self-taught singer-songwriter is most concerned with how her music may help people in emotional and spiritual need. In a world of persistent change, Lay’s goal is to have concentrations of love and energy in her work that double as a helping hand or a voice whispering “everything is going to be ok.” The singer’s abiding belief is that immense change also means invaluable transformation and permanent relief. Intention is her North Star.

Hailed by publications such as PitchforkThe GuardianSPIN and Uncut magazine, Lay’s solo albums, including “Geist,” “August,” “Living Water,” and “All this life goin’ down” are noted for their thoughtful and entirely tender reflections on life’s big questions. Her seraphic voice has drawn comparisons to British folk icons Anne Briggs, Sandy Denny and Vashti Bunyan. Though an old soul, Lay aims to meet her listeners in the present. For her, creating a song, a recording or a live performance that is relatable and communal is of the utmost importance for we are constantly in flux and those unknowns, met with compassion, can be beautiful.

AMAMA

PRE-SAVE/ORDER: https://Crumb.lnk.to/AMAMA

(April 24, 2024) - Following the announcement of their new album AMAMA last month, Crumb shares another taste of the LP with the single “The Bug.” Alongside the new single, Crumb shares the playful and visually invigorating video directed by Haoyan of America.

Additionally, Crumb announces their headline North American tour, which begins mid-July and sees the band hit 30 cities across the country including Chicago, Austin, Boston, Los Angeles, and a hometown show in Brooklyn. Crumb will be accompanied by L’Rain, Vagabon, and Discovery Zone on select dates. Full tour routing can be found below and tickets go on sale this Friday, April 26th at 10am local time.

Speaking about the new single, Crumb’s Lila Ramani shares:

“‘The Bug’ is a song that has existed in our universe since early Crumb days, pre-Jinx era. The origins go back to a motel in Nebraska on one of our earliest tours when I woke up with a bunch of bed bug bites. Wired and unable to sleep, I wandered around the motel singing what would become the outro to the song. Years later when we were finally recording it, it took on a more tender meaning…the bug doesn’t have to be an insect - the bug can be a friend, a lover, or that nagging feeling that finds you late at night.”

AMAMA is Crumb’s most carefree and heartfelt project yet—a blend of poetic abstraction, introspective honesty, and tasteful sonic experimentation. The album finds Crumb in their most animated and dynamic form, a reality voiced by their use of glitchy pitch-shifted vocals, cell phone recordings, nautical blips, sax mouthpiece solos, blasted drum samples, and piano strings dampened with Silly Putty. Releasing on May 17th via Crumb Records, the album features the title track "AMAMA," a vibrant tribute to singer Lila Ramani's grandmother that’s supported further by a music video directed by longtime collaborator Abraham El-Makawy, which weaves Lila’s archival home footage with artwork sourced by 702 fan submissions, presenting a moving community-sourced mosaic of nostalgia. Blending psychedelia, pop, jazz, and rock, AMAMA solidifies Crumb's unique musical identity. Produced in Los Angeles with Johnscott Sanford and Jonathan Rado, the album is an illuminating reflection on finding stability, connection, and clarity amid a nomadic lifestyle.

In 2023, Crumb released their single “Le Temple Volant” with Melody’s Echo Chamber, which received acclaim from Pitchfork, The FADER, Stereogum, and more. AMAMA follows a cohesive line back through breakout EPs self-titled Crumb and Locket, 2019’s Jinx, and 2021’s Ice Melt, which Rolling Stone called "a captivating trek to the metaphysical and back down to Earth.”

Check out “The Bug” and pre-order / pre-save AMAMA above, and see full tour routing and album details below. Stay tuned for more Crumb coming soon.

KÁRYYN Shares New Single "ODAR" || New EP 'Calm KAOSS!' Due Out 5/22 On Mute

KÁRYYN SHARES NEW SINGLE “ODAR”

NEW EP CALM KAOSS! OUT 5/22 ON MUTE

Today, on Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, Armenian-American artist KÁRYYN shares her new single “ODAR” alongside a self-directed tapestry of Armenian artifact, language and performance.

Watch the video for “ODAR” HERE

Pre-order Calm KAOSS! HERE.

“ODAR”, meaning other in Armenian, is KÁRYYN’s interpretation of the folk song “Odaroutioun”, a song passed down through generations, often sung at gatherings in her grandparents’ house in Aleppo, Syria.

Written by Avetik Isahakyan, a prominent Armenian lyric poet, writer and political activist, the words to the song were originally from a letter written to his family, while in political exile, and later turned into a song adopted post-genocide to represent the Armenian’s plight. Known as a patriotic song, most commonly sung by men, KÁRYYN’s interpretation poses a critical examination of what it means to live in otherness.

“Our Armenian language is an ancient written alphabet, found in the illuminated manuscripts, a language on the endangered language list today,” KÁRYYN explains. “The language is threatened further due to the refugee crisis caused by the genocide, and by the crisis which moved and destroyed one of the largest Armenian communities during the 2011 Syrian war. When we speak and sing in Armenian, it is an act of survival and activism. A language from as far back as the 5th century, only Sanskrit and a few others are older.”

“ODAR’ is the second single shared from KÁRYYN’s forthcoming Calm KAOSS! EP. It follows “the REAL”, a plea to personal strength and singular consciousness that was described as “techno-symphonic grandeur” by The Guardian, as well as “sharp-edged, vivacious” and “a stylistic triumph” by CLASH. The song was remixed by Australian techno producer and Mute labelmate HAAi

In January, KÁRYYN began her most prolific year to date with the release of her personal protest song, and Hudson Mohawke co-production, “Anthem For Those Who Know”. Since 2024 began, her new work has graced the pages of Pitchfork, FADER, Resident Advisor, Stereogum, The Line of Best Fit, CLASH and been supported by BBC Radio 16 Music, Reprezent and Foundation FM

Due for release on May 22, 2024 via Mute, her Calm KAOSS! EP serves as a bridge to carry KÁRYYN from the formative inspirations of her first releases to a moment of self-assurance and revelation, as she continues to channel messages from the future.
